Battery reel mower with built-in groomer

The Falkenstein Consul Groomer brings a technology to the home lawn that has so far been found mainly on golf courses: a permanently installed groomer that works with every cut. Add to that three separate electric motors, a Tournament Cut bedknife, a grass catcher where it doesn't get in the way while mowing (at the rear), and a choice of two cutting widths.

Height of cut 3 to 15 mm (0.12 to 0.59 in). The Consul Groomer is built for short, dense lawns. For cutting heights of 15 to 35 mm, the Falkenstein Consul Comb with a built-in comb will follow later.

Cutting width 40 or 55 cm (16 or 22 in). The 40 cm version is easier to handle on smaller and more complex areas, the 55 cm version covers larger lawns in fewer passes. Technology and cut quality are identical on both.

Pre-order now

The Consul Groomer is now available for pre-order. We build the first series over the winter in our workshop, with delivery in March 2027, just in time for the start of the mowing season.

We appreciate everyone who places their trust in us this early. As a thank-you, the first 50 pre-orders receive a 15 percent pre-order discount.

Payment and security

Payment is possible by PayPal or credit card, both covered by the respective provider's buyer protection. If you prefer not to pay the full amount in advance, you can pay a 50 percent deposit and the balance with the shipping notification. We will send you a payment link for this. The pre-order discount applies in both cases. Just send us a short message.

What makes the Consul Groomer special

What is a groomer?

In professional turf care, a groomer is a rotating tool mounted directly in front of the cutting unit: a shaft with many star-shaped blades side by side. Its job is to lift lateral shoots (stolons) and lying grass blades before the cut and so reduce horizontal growth. Conventional groomers usually run at high speed and cut into the plants themselves, which puts additional stress on the turf.

Our approach: the rotating comb

On the Consul Groomer, the groomer deliberately turns more slowly. It doesn't cut. It only lifts and aligns grass blades and stolons, and leaves the actual cut entirely to the sharp reel and bedknife. That is why we also call our groomer the rotating comb. The result: a clean cut in a single pass with as little stress on the turf as possible.

Built in, working with every cut

As on golf course greens mowers, the groomer is permanently mounted in front of the reel and works every time you mow, with no conversion and no separate pass. Lifted lateral shoots are caught by the reel right away instead of slipping flat underneath it.

Why the height of cut ends at 15 mm

For the groomer to work, the tips of its stars have to reach into the grass just below the set height of cut. How far they reach depends on the diameter of the stars and the space between front roller and reel. We designed the stars as large as this space allows, which lets the groomer work up to a 15 mm height of cut. Larger stars would collide with the reel or the roller.

The machine is therefore designed entirely for this range. Mowing higher with the Consul Groomer wouldn't make sense anyway: grooming is meant for short, dense turf, where lying blades and runners would otherwise slip under the reel. At higher cutting heights, a groomer no longer adds any benefit. For 15 to 35 mm we are therefore developing a separate machine: the Falkenstein Consul Comb, with a fixed comb instead of a groomer. It will follow later.

Three motors, three tasks

Rear roller, reel and groomer each have their own electric motor. Each drive works independently at exactly the speed its task requires, instead of being driven off a single motor via chains or belts. This is the only way to run the groomer slower than the reel. Reel and groomer are direct-driven without a gearbox, the rear roller is driven via a planetary gear. The motors were built specifically for this mower by a German motor manufacturer and run very quietly.

Tournament Cut bedknife

The bedknife is a Tournament Cut, the type used on golf course greens. Reel and bedknife are made of high-strength steels. The reel has eight blades on both cutting widths.

Central, stepless height adjustment

The height of cut is adjusted steplessly via a central knurled nut. There is no need to adjust left and right separately: one adjustment is enough, and the reel stays parallel to the ground.

Enclosed cutting unit

With three driven shafts, safety comes first for us. The cutting unit is fully enclosed, and reel and groomer cannot be reached during operation. Release the handle and all motors stop immediately.

Battery power

The battery is included. We will publish capacity and area per charge once testing with the prototype is complete. Replacement batteries are available directly from us, like all other spare parts for the Consul.

Built like a greens mower

Fixed cutting unit as a service cassette

On a golf course, nobody swaps the reel for a scarifier. Greens mowers have a fixed cutting unit because that is the only way the setting stays accurate over time. That is exactly how we built the Consul. The complete cutting unit is installed as a cassette: fixed during operation, but removable as one unit for service and grinding. A cutting unit set to within hundredths of a millimetre should stay exactly where it belongs while mowing. When the reel needs grinding, you only send in the cassette, not the whole machine.

Relief grinding from the factory

Like all our reel mowers, the Consul's reel is relief ground. This is the grind greenkeepers have their reel mowers sharpened with. It reduces the contact area between reel and bedknife to a narrow cutting edge, which means less friction and a longer-lasting sharp edge between grinds.

Grass catcher at the rear

The grass catcher sits at the rear. While mowing, you see the cutting edge in front of you instead of a basket, and you can guide the mower closer to edges and borders. When the basket fills up, its weight sits over the rear roller, the pivot point when turning, which keeps the mower easy to turn even with a full catcher. The basket can be removed without tools.

Why Consul

The idea of a rear catcher isn't new. In 1976, the Australian manufacturer Scott Bonnar launched the Diplomat, a reel mower with an enclosed reel at the front and a grass catcher at the rear. It was ahead of its time and was discontinued after the company was taken over. Since then, hardly anyone has taken up the concept. The Diplomat was our inspiration, and the name Consul is our tribute to it.
