The Purpose of Deep Soil Loosening
The goal of deep soil loosening is to stimulate root growth by improving water and air permeability in the soil.
How Does the Lawnclaw Work?
The Lawnclaw is inserted into the ground, and before lifting it out, you tilt the handle toward yourself at an angle of about 5-15° to further loosen the soil.
For deep loosening, aim for 6 - 10 holes per square foot (60 - 100 holes per square meter). With our Lawnclaw’s 5 solid tines, you would need to insert it 1 - 2 times per square foot (12 - 20 times per square meter). We recommend the Lawnclaw for lawns up to 2,150 square feet (200 m²).
There's no need to add sand afterward. The solid tines do not remove soil, leaving holes open to allow water and air to reach the roots.
When to Perform Deep Soil Loosening?
This technique is ideal for winter lawn care. We recommend deep loosening when the lawn won’t be frequently walked on afterward, as the lifted soil needs time to root downward, or else unevenness can occur. In most regions, November or December is best, as there’s usually no snow yet, and subsequent frost further breaks up deeper soil layers.
