Falkenstein Consul Comb
Cordless Reel Mower with Comb
The Falkenstein Consul Comb is the versatile cordless reel mower for a well-kept lawn, from a very short cut up to typical home lawn heights. A comb in front of the reel lifts the grass before the cut so the reel catches every blade cleanly. Add to that two separate electric motors, a Tournament Cut bedknife, a reel with 6, 8, 10 or 12 blades, a grass catcher where it doesn't get in the way while mowing: at the rear, and a choice of two cutting widths.
Cutting width 15.7 or 21.7 inches (40 or 55 cm). The 40 cm version is easier to handle on smaller lawns with tight corners, the 55 cm version covers larger areas in fewer passes. Technology and cut quality are the same on both.
Pre-order now
The Consul is available for pre-order now. We build the first series over the winter in our workshop in Bramsche, Germany, and deliveries start in March 2027, in time for the start of the mowing season.
We appreciate everyone who puts their trust in us at this early stage.
Everything about pre-ordering: process, payment, cancellation
For pre-order customers
The first 50 pre-orders of the Consul series (Consul Groomer and Consul Comb combined) receive a 15 percent pre-order discount.
The first 20 of these also get their Consul in a RAL color of their choice at no extra charge. Normally, a custom color costs extra. Simply select the "Custom RAL color" option when ordering. After your order we will contact you by email, confirm that your order is among the first 20 and agree on the color with you. Once all 20 places are taken, the regular surcharge applies again.
What makes the Consul Comb special
The comb in front of the reel
Grass tends to lie down during mowing. The reel then pushes it away rather than cutting it, and individual blades are left standing. The comb in front of the reel prevents this: it reaches into the grass, lifts it and feeds it to the reel. It has no drive of its own and does not cut. Golf courses use a comb in front of the reel for exactly this purpose.
Infinitely adjustable, disengaged when not needed
The comb works with every mow, with no separate pass. It is infinitely adjustable in height, so you can set how deep it reaches into the grass and how intensively it works. When it is not needed, it can be raised far enough that it no longer touches the grass and only the reel mows.
Comb or groomer?
The comb works across the entire height of cut range and needs no motor of its own. The groomer on the Falkenstein Consul Groomer has its own drive and additionally lifts lateral shoots actively on very closely mown, dense turf. Due to its design, it only works up to 0.6 inches (15 mm).
Separate motors
Rear roller and reel each have their own electric motor. Each drive works independently and at exactly the speed its task requires, instead of being driven by chains or belts from a shared motor. The reel is direct-driven without a gearbox, the rear roller is driven via a planetary gearbox. The motors are not off-the-shelf motors: a German motor manufacturer builds them exclusively for us, with a custom shaft. And they run very quietly.
Choose the right reel
The lower you mow, the more cuts per meter you need for an even finish. That is why the Consul Comb is available with a 6, 8, 10 or 12-blade reel. For the best possible result, we recommend choosing the reel based on the height of cut you mow at most of the time:
| Height of cut | Recommended reel |
|---|---|
| 0.12 to 0.2 inches (3 to 5 mm) | 12-blade reel |
| 0.24 to 0.4 inches (6 to 10 mm) | 10-blade reel |
| 0.43 to 0.6 inches (11 to 15 mm) | 8-blade reel |
| 0.63 to 1.4 inches (16 to 35 mm) | 6-blade reel |
This recommendation refers to the best possible finish: as many grass blades as possible are caught cleanly, and at very low heights you get the most even surface, for example for a good ball roll. In principle, every reel can also be used outside these ranges, so a 12-blade reel will also mow at 10 or 15 mm, for example. The result is better, however, when the number of blades matches the height of cut. If you want to mow at a different height later on, the cutting unit can be converted.
Tournament Cut bedknife
The bedknife is a Tournament Cut, the design used on golf course greens. Reel and bedknife are made of high-strength steels.
Infinitely adjustable height of cut
The height of cut can be adjusted infinitely from 0.12 to 1.4 inches (3 to 35 mm) via two knurled nuts.
Enclosed cutting unit
Safety comes first for us. The cutting unit is fully enclosed, the reel is not accessible during operation.
Battery powered
The battery is included. We will publish capacity and area coverage per charge as soon as testing with the prototype is complete. Spare batteries are available directly from us, like all other spare parts for the Consul.
Built like a greens mower
Bolted cutting unit
On a golf course, nobody swaps the reel for a scarifier. Greens mowers have a permanently installed cutting unit, because that is the only way the adjustment stays right over time. That is exactly how we built the Consul. The cutting unit, made up of reel and bedknife, is bolted on from below with four bolts. The rigid, distortion-free connection keeps a cutting unit adjusted to within hundredths of a millimeter exactly where it belongs during operation. For service and sharpening, it can be removed downwards as one unit after loosening the bolts. Only the cutting unit needs to be sent in, not the whole machine.
Relief ground from the factory
As with all our reel mowers, the reel of the Consul is relief ground. This is the grind greenkeepers have their reel mowers sharpened with. It reduces the contact area between reel and bedknife to a narrow cutting edge. That means less friction and a longer-lasting sharp cut between sharpening intervals.
Rear grass catcher
The grass catcher sits at the rear. While mowing, you see the cutting edge instead of a catcher, and the machine can be guided closer to edges and flower beds. A full catcher sits over the pivot point above the rear roller, improving balance when turning. The catcher can be removed without tools.
Why Consul
The idea of a rear catcher is not new. In 1976 the Australian manufacturer Scott Bonnar launched the Diplomat, a reel mower with an enclosed reel at the front and a grass catcher at the rear. It was ahead of its time and was discontinued after the company was taken over. Since then, hardly anyone has taken on the concept. The Diplomat was our inspiration, and the name Consul is our tribute to it.
